Petasites japonicus 'Giganteus'

La plante avec les plus grandes feuilles que l'on puisse cultiver sous nos climats sans protection hivernale, la pétasite géante sait impressionner non seulement par son déploiement mais aussi par sa vitesse de croissance. Ses rhizomes s'étendent de façon démesurée; oubliez l'idée de la planter dans une bordure ordonnée, elle est pratiquement incontrôlable.  Elle gagne à être mise en valeur, mais toute seule! Parfaite sur le rebord d'un boisé ou dans la pente d'un ravin. À noter, ses tiges et boutons floraux sont comestibles et mangés à grande échelle dans son Japon natif. If oversized foliage is what you are after, this is the plant to grow!  Undoubtedly the largest leaf one can grow here without winter protection. But if the giant petasites knows how to impress, it's not only by its size but also its speed of growth.  Its rhizomes spread in a stupendous manner ; forget the idea of having it in a mixed border, it is practically impossible to control.  It is deserving of a space in the garden, but somewhere on its own where it will be able to roam free!   Great for the edge of ditch or the woodland.  It prefers a little shade anyway.  It is interesting to note that its stems and flowering buds are edible and eaten on a large scale in Japan. Beware though, they are extremely bitter before cooked properly!
